Description
Ammonia is one of the end products of protein metabolism in the body. Normally, it turns into urea and is excreted from the body, but if the normal functioning of the liver and kidneys is disturbed, this process is inhibited and ammonia levels increase.
The study of ammonia levels is used to diagnose liver and kidney failure, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatitis, cirrhosis. It should be carried out in conjunction with the assessment of ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, urea nitrogen, creatinine.
When and who needs the test?
Acute liver failure, kidney disease, control of parenteral nutrition, intestinal dysbacteriosis.
