Description
The test allows for accurate evaluation of total calcium levels in relation to albumin concentration. Since 45–50% of total serum calcium is bound to proteins, primarily albumin, changes in albumin levels can influence total calcium measurements. A decrease in albumin may result in underestimated total calcium levels compared to the actual concentration in the blood, and vice versa.
When and who needs the test?
The test is supported by clinical guidelines and helps accurately assess total calcium levels by taking albumin concentration into account. This allows clinicians to determine whether further investigation is needed to rule out potential causes of:
Hypercalcemia:
- Parathyroid gland disorders (particularly primary hyperparathyroidism)
- Bone metastases
- Certain medications etc.
Hypocalcemia:
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Kidney disease etc.
Biological material
- Venous blood
Preparing for a blood test
In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:
- an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
- 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
