Description
Tick-borne encephalitis is an acute viral infectious disease characterized by predominant involvement of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), often with the development of paralysis and persistent neurological complications. The disease is transmitted through the bites of ixodid ticks or via the alimentary route and has a distinct natural focal association with forest and forest-steppe zones, with pronounced spring-summer seasonality corresponding to the peak period of tick activity.
PCR testing for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a qualitative blood test that enables detection of the pathogen's RNA directly in human blood. It is used to confirm infection with tick-borne encephalitis virus following a tick bite and allows an informed decision to be made regarding the need for emergency prophylaxis.
When and who needs the test?
The test is advisable for examining tourists, hunters, military personnel, foresters, and individuals working or recreating in forest or park areas, i.e. those in a zone of elevated risk of tick bite.
Indications for ordering:
- Following a tick bite in endemic regions.
- In the first days of fever of unclear origin after time spent outdoors.
- In the presence of influenza-like symptoms (fever, weakness, headache, myalgia).
- In the presence of neurological symptoms (nuchal rigidity, nausea, vomiting, impaired consciousness).
- For early confirmation of tick-borne encephalitis virus infection (during the viremic phase).
- For differential diagnosis of the viremic phase of tick-borne encephalitis from acute respiratory viral infection.
- In individuals unvaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis or with unknown vaccination status.
Biological material
- Venous blood
Preparing for a blood test
